It’s time for another weekly update!

3/17/14

I stopped by Student Flights to visit the best travel consultant ever and plan my three spring break trips! If you’re ever in Sydney and you’re looking for a great deal on flights, hotels, and tours, go to the Student Flights on the corner of George St. and Quay St. and ask for Scott Green. He’s been such a great help in helping me find the best travel deals.

Can you guess what three places I’ll be traveling to during spring break? (Hint: All three places are in Australia)

Anton switched into my Introduction to Electrical Engineering class about two weeks ago so now we’re roommates as well as classmates! How awesome is that?! Prior to our first lab we had to construct a full wave rectifier. A full wave rectifier is basically a device that converts AC (alternating current) power into DC (direct current) power so that the flow of the current within a power supply system flows in one direction. To completely construct our full wave rectifiers, Anton and I used a technique called soldering, which is the process of joining two metals together by melting another metal (usually lead) between the other two metals.

I am soldering in this picture. In my left hand is the lead and in my right hand is the heating device used to melt the lead onto the surface of the full wave rectifier.

After working hard on the full wave rectifier in the morning, I decided to join my friend Annie on a trip to Manly Beach in the afternoon. We took a free bus to Circular Quay and caught a ferry from there to Manly. The ferry ride provided me with some really great views of the skyline and the Opera House.

No matter how many times I see the Opera House, I don’t think the awe of seeing it in person will ever fade.

We could not have picked a more perfect day to go to Manly Beach! After about 20 minutes on the ferry, we arrived at Manly and started walking towards the beach. The weather was a sunny 76 degrees and it wasn’t too crowded. Once there, Annie tanned while I caught up on some readings for my Introduction to Social Inquiry Class.

The resident assistant of our floor, Veronique, coordinated a “Floor Party” for all of the residents on level 8. This gave us a chance to come out into the hallway and mingle with each other while eating snacks and listening to some good tunes. I had a great time hanging out with the people on my floor!

Steffie and Anton thought it would be cool to wear matching elephant shirts to the party. Steffie’s shirt is from Malaysia and Anton’s shirt is from Africa.

I went to my first Australian rugby game! Since rugby is just as popular in Australia as football is in America, I was curious to see what all the hype was about. A group of my friends and I went to the rugby game and cheered for the New South Wales Waratahs as they defeated the Melbourne Rebels. We had a great time!

Be sure to check out my blog post about what I did on March 23rd. It was so much fun that I couldn’t fit it into this post!
